Francophile Friday: Cherubic on Rue Montorgueil

ink & watercolour illustration, 8.75" x 7" [22.5 x 18cm] ACQUIRE PRINTS

Paris.  Rue Montorgueil.  On a corner.  Somewhere.  There's a gilded cherub to watch over you.

Thanks to my dear friend From Cali for the inspiration.  If I'd been prepared, I'd have asked her ahead of time for a specific location, but what can I say: I have no scout's badges in my collection of childhood mementos. {And if I did, I'd have bejewelled them.  Perhaps not quite as much as this.}

I might take some Fridays off here and there.  If so, this little angelic fellow and his kitty mascot can be your lucky charms until our next weekend together.  And I've selected a versatile outfit to suit this tricky trans-seasonal time of year in both hemispheres.  The shoemaker's elves have fashioned these ruffled beauties to complement it.  And on that note...

Happy Francophile Friday to you!

  1. Even using this little Touch I recognized that cherub! Katie can probably tell you exactly where this is. Love your illo. You have brought back wonderful memories! Thank you!!!

  2. There's nothing better than a corner somewhere in Paris, with a mascot peeking from the window.

  3. It's enough to know that it's in Paris, with a gilded cherub—as you strap on your fab ruffled shoes and go dancing (is that a good guess, I hope?). Seriously, Shell, do you not realize that without you my life is completely lacking in whimsy and style? I'll be here in frumpy duds and flat-heeled shoes, waiting patiently, ma chère . . .

  4. from cali ~ I'm always happy to whisk you off into the land of happy memories. Thanks for the lovely inspiration, ma chère.

Hiker ~ the stories she could tell.

Alexa ~ I'm sure you'd look stylish, no matter what your ensemble happens to be. But thank you! I'll mostly be here, just wanted you all to not be alarmed if I'm occasionally absent.

  9. My goodness! Those bling shoes are the most things I have ever seen.

  10. I could buy those bejeweled shoes, perhaps with the profits from the sale of my home.

I'll be here, Shell, whenever you are.

  11. That's just the sweet smiling angel I want watching over me, in Paris or anywhere! I'm not sure the exact location of this cherub, but Stohrer is at 51 rue Montorgueil and I know I'm always smiling when I'm eating a Stohrer pain au chocolat. As much as like those sparkly shoes, I don't think I'll give up my comfy flats.

  12. Francophile Fridays make me yearn to be in Paris. One of these days I'll join kitty in the window. In the meantime, I'll start pulling together my fashionable wardrobe with your help. (I'll take the layers and leave the bejeweled shoes for a Hollywood starlet.)

  14. Dear V ~ there can't be many endroits left in Paris that you haven't captured with your beautiful lens.

Margaret ~ they take bedazzled to a whole new level.

Petrea ~ you might have to throw in Boz, so I know that would be absolutely out of the question.

Thanks, Katie! The cherub gives us another reason to visit Stohrer, not that we need it. And much as I'm an habitual high-heel wearer, I concede I'll need flats in Paris!

Susan ~ you strike me as a layers girl. And kitty would love your company.

Thanks, Favourite Vintage Finds! And right back at you and you-know-who. Kisses from Ella.

  16. Genie ~ the ruffled shoes remind me of a bag a girlfriend gave me several years ago. It's still one of my favourites.

And a little birdie told me she's fairly sure this cherub is located on the corner of Rue Mauconseil and Rue Montorgueil right next to L'Escargot. Thank you, little birdie.
