Francophile Friday: A Love Stohrer

Is it a coincidence that Paris, pâtisserie and pining all start with the letter P?   I think not.

Blame it on Katie.  She's in Paris right now {sigh}.  And Katie's been going on and on about all kinds of pastries, especially those from Stohrer.  Oh, my.

As a result of all that blatant flaunting of buttery, flaky delights, Cali and I were discussing the possible merits of a Calorie Exchange Programme and she sent me a photo of the pretty facade of this potential calorific offender.   Stohrer is located at 51, rue Montorgueil just in case you want to visit next time you're in Paris.  Walking to and from is recommended.

Happy Francophile Friday to you!

  1. Look at that beautiful sign and flowery windows! I really like it Sherreee...

I always dream to visit Paris. There is also a place called Paris here in Malaysia; Paris Village. But exactly not as the r-e-a-l Paris in France...

  2. ShSh, I love this drawing, the understated colors, like your others. Thanks for the reminder to visit my local French patisserie today!

  3. Thanks to my permanent search for the perfect diet (meaning easy and efficient !!), that's a place I've never visited !!
But I refuse the idea that people from the US and Australia know it better than a native so I'll have to force myself and try their pastries !!!!!! The baba au rhum, the puits d'amour, the ambre, the tarte aux fraises des bois .......

  4. Yes, calories should learn foreign customs and languages too. It's only fair. Where should I send a very sticky bun, excuse me, gateau?

  5. Finie ~ it's still fun to have a local Paris, even though it's not the r-e-a-l one. :)

Cafe ~ I'm happy to send you sniffing for pastries any time of the day or night.

Marylène ~ oh, it's ok, you can join in our Calorie Exchange Programme. We're lacking in places to deposit them thus far but one never knows...

Mise ~ hee hee!! You are quick, miss.

  6. I suppose you know Petrea is FLAUNTING your pictures over at pasadena daily photo. (The two men holding the crown are darling.)

  7. Thanks, KB, on both counts! {You'll note they are wearing shoes.} I'm late doing the rounds tonight and only just saw Petrea's blatant display of flauntation ~ I'm very chuffed, indeed!

  8. WOW, Shell! Your drawings always turn out so much better than my photos. I hesitated to send that one to you because I felt it lacked something, but your drawing provides what the photo lacks! Damn, you are GOOD!

Phx also starts with the letter P and I took the photo while on a walking tour with her. I hope Katie sees this as she was the reason I remembered it. Now it's been immortalized by you! COOL!

  9. Um, any chance you're giving away this drawing as well, Shell? As part of your 1st + 2 weeks blogoversary, perhaps? I WAAAANT IT!!!

  10. Okay, Shell—next time I make my way to Paris (sigh), I'm gonna send you all my fave photos to turn into something REALLY memorable! When I lived there, I worked not quite walk-it-off distance from Stohrer. Somehow, my feet just seemed to take me there. My fave was their tarte aux fraises des bois. Now I'd need that Calorie Exchange for sure!

  11. Awesome painting of Stohrer! It's like you know it by heart already. For Saturday dinner at my cousin's I'll go there and buy 5 different pastries for dessert -- I'll be sure to photograph them for you!

  12. Cali ~ you are too modest ~ your photo is lovely! But thank you. :)

PCN ~ oh, you Aries girls know how to ask for what you want ~ no doubt about you, hee hee!

Alexa ~ your lovely photos are memorable on their own, but I'll gladly accept them, with bells on. :)

Katie ~ yay! I'm happy you could pop in today! Thanks to you, I'm going to have to visit our 'local' pâtisserie so I can engage in some transference in lieu of the real thing.

  13. What a lovely facade. Paris has the most beautiful looking shop fronts. Oh to be back there.
btw I was reading some of your earlier posts just now and could not stop laughing. You are the funniest writer I have come across in a long time.

  14. Yes, the walking will be a must after all the pastries. Did someone say pining?

  15. Cafe, where do we go for Parisian pastries in Pasadena, pray tell?

Pop Culture Nerd also begins with a P, as does Petrea, not that it matters at this late date. But it should be mentioned.

  16. Oh too funny Shell, lovely play on words. Isn't it wonderful that they are finally together in beautiful Paree? As for the pastries; my widening girth can do without the calories but I'm enjoying the photos nonetheless.

  17. Adventures ~ wow, thank you! You are most kind. And discerning. :)

Margaret ~ I really should have used a capital P for pining.

Petrea ~ sorry! Knowing what blushing wallflowers you and PCN are, I was trying not to embarrass you. ;)

MmeB ~ it is wonderful. I can't begin to imagine how romantic it would be, wandering the streets of Paris together, laughing and softly brushing flakes of pastry off each other's nose. Sigh!!

  18. Hey, I didn't drop any Euros at Stohrer but I managed to eat my way through a fair share of pain au chocolats and baguettes at every other patisserie I could find. I'm on the "Girl, You Ain't in Paris Anymore" Diet. It's not fun. I'm thinking if I hadn't walked a million miles a day in Paris I would have had to come home on a barge. I've got some pastry pics I'll send you. You'll gain weight just looking at them.

  19. I'm the cretin who doesn't like rich foods (cheeses and sauces). So if not for pastries I might have starved in Paris. All that walking put me in need of pastry. And well-cushioned shoes, I might add, V.

  20. Virginia ~ those photos are divine, thank you!! I'll do a few extra flights of stairs tonight to be on the safe side. :)

Petrea ~ I could be in trouble, as I'm happy to eat cheese and sauce as well as pastries.
