LL Cool Grey

Here's something a bit different, partly to shock Petrea lest she think I do nothing but gaze upon kittens, roses and pink frilly things morning, noon and night. {Almost, but not quite.}

This little sketch is inspired by a scene in the black and white video clip for Going Back to Cali {no coincidence that from cali, another of our regulars, is quite fond of it!} The song was on the 1989 Walking with a Panther album by LL Cool J ~ which stands for Ladies Love Cool James, though I'm guessing his parents love the perfectly nice name they gave him: James Todd Smith.

James is not wrong in his opinion of himself, if the clip is anything to go by. While the young Ladies' skirts could do with an extra few inches and a more modest camera angle, there are some hip horn parts, and nice retro scenery. And I do love black and white images, so it was a serendipitous excuse to do another one of my own. {Yes, you can expect something frilly next time.}

  1. LOL! The title is perfect as is the sketch. Who knows, maybe the scantily clad "ladies" are actually wearing pink. "I don't think so."
    I bet their unmentionables were frilly! LL would probably like that.

  3. Cali ~ I wonder how many men don't like frilly unmentionables.

    Margaret ~ just imagine what surprises might come along if you were wearing them!

  4. Good point, Shell. I say if they like them then they should wear them. ;)

  5. I am shocked. SHOCKED. I watched the whole video and I liked it. Found the scene you drew, which I also liked. Hey, and it was fun to see shots of the Pacific Theatre, which burned down days after I moved here so I never saw it except for the burned-out wreckage.

    But that's beside the point. I am thrilled to be mentioned and I love your drawing, frilly or not.

  6. Love the drawing. And, like Petrea, was shocked to discover that I liked the music/video as well. Shell, you certainly draw inspiration from some disparate sources!

  7. Petrea ~ thank you for the intel on the Pacific Theatre ... I'm not shocked that you're able to give us a locality lesson.

    Alexa ~ we can thank Cali's eclectic taste for introducing me to the clip, and I was likewise surprised to find myself drawing something from it. :)

  10. Oh Shell, what fun! You captured the best scene in the clip, faithfully! May I suggest that you do an encore and sketch the second best scene in the clip which is near the end where James is standing against a wall with the cool lady with dark hair in a pony tail with her arms crossed and such a cute skirt?
    Brilliant, as always!
    PS I wasn't shocked (I've seen worse in my tender 50 odd years) but the repetitive nature of these songs drives me insane so I had to turn the volume down.

  13. Wow ~ absolutely, Cali! I'd be honoured. It's lovely to see a pic next to you. Please use it for your profile whenever you like.

    MmeBenaut has spoken, indeed ~ and that girl's skirt is FRILLY. A fine segue back to the pretty things. Ask and you shall receive, isn't that how it goes? Just about to post it now.
